Celluloid Sermons $39 Christian filmmaking, done outside of the corporate Hollywood industry and produced for Christian churches, affected a significant audience of church people. Protestant denominations and individuals believed that they could preach and teach more effectively through the mass medium of film. Although suspicion toward the film industry marked many conservatives during the early 1930s, many Christian leaders came to believe in the power of technology to convert or to morally instruct people. Thus the growth of a Christian film industry was an extension of the Protestant tradition of preaching, with the films becoming celluloid sermons. Celluloid Sermons is the first historical study of this phenomenon. Terry Lindvall and Andrew Quicke highlight key characters, studios, and influential films of the movement from 1930 to 1986osuch as the Billy Graham Association, with its major WorldWide Pictures productions of films like The Hiding Place, Ken Curtis' Gateway Films, the apocalyptic "end-time" films by Mark IV (e.g.Thief in the Night), and the instructional video-films of Dobson's Focus on the Familyoassessing the extent to which the church's commitment to filmmaking accelerated its missions. Surprisingly, the volume demonstrates that these filmic endeavors had the unintended consequence of contributing to the secularization of liberal denominations. Terry Lindvall is C. S. Lewis Professor of Communication and Christian Thought at Virginia Wesleyan College. His book Sanctuary Cinema: Origins of the Christian Film Industry (NYU Press) won the 2008 Religious Communication Association Book of the Year Award. Andrew Qu ick e is Professor in the Communication and the Arts Department at Regent University and the author of several books, most recently (with Andrew Laszlo) Every Frame a Rembrandt: The Art and Practice of Cinematography. |

Essential Sermons $28.19 The Works of St. Augustine, A Translation for the 21st Century initiated by the late Fr. John Rotelle, OSA has made available to the Englishspeaking world an unprecedented number of Augustines works formerly available only in Latin. There has been an explosion in Augustinian scholarship throughout the last five decades. Until recently, the secondary literature tended to focus on Augustines major treatises the Confessions, The Trinity, Teaching Christianity, and the City of God, the works commonly available in modern language translation. Now a plethora of lesser known works including his sermons and letters has provided new insight into this complex and talented theologian. The eleven volumes of Augustines popular sermons (Sermones ad populum) including the recently discovered Dolbeau sermons expertly translated by Fr. Edmund Hill (19101997) in clear, contemporary English showcase Augustine the brilliant speaker and engaging preacher of the Word and have proven an indispensable resource for contemporary scholarship. Peter Brown and other leading Augustine scholars have turned to the sermons as an indispensable source to nuance and reappraise their earlier positions. Hills translation and extensive notes have received many accolades by scholars but professors have clamored for a one volume anthology in paperback form that would be affordable to students and that could be used as required texts in teaching undergraduates, graduate students and seminarians. Fr. Doyle has undertaken that task and has carefully chosen an anthology that is representative of the bishops finest preaching on a wide range of subjects including God, Christ, sin, grace, conversion, martyrdom, sacraments, marriage, wealth, poverty, Christmas, Easter and living the Christian life. Students and preachers alike will discover Augustines masterful interpretation of the Word of God and creative skills in engaging the people of God by using the finest rhetorical skills available to his time based on the principles taught by Cicero. To engage Christians the preacher must first capture their attention (delectare) in order to teach (docere) fundamental saving truths to persuade (flectere) them to live a life of discipleship and put into practice such high ideals. Essential Sermons will include mostly whole sermons with a brief introduction but in some cases powerful excerpts from lengthy homilies that would have been impossible to incorporate in a one volume work. Fr. Doyle has written a concise Introduction to Augustines preaching and has included a table of themes for easy and convenient consultation. |

Dancing Sermons $21.59 ‘Dancing Sermons indeed . . . Believe what you will . . . when it comes to it, we all come from the same root and have the same needs, and suffer the same failings. It takes the reader from one beat to the other, dancing non-stop . . . an easy, accommodating read, which does not require one to be a staunch Christian or belong to any particular religion to be hooked on it.’ Midweek Sun. Sermons to the People $15.99 A superb new translation brings the words of Augustine the preacher stirringly to life! When the great Saint Augustine was called from his country home to become Bishop of Hippo in the fourth century, his new responsibilities took him away from the solitude of his writing and into the glare of the public eye. The author of two of the greatest works of religious literature, Confessions and City of God , Augustine became a shepherd to the people, inspiring and enlightening them with his sermons. His skills as a speaker were as greatif not greaterthan his skills as a writer. According to his friend Possidius, Those who read what Augustine wrote on the divine topics do get something out of them. But those who saw and heard him in personthey were the ones who got heaven and Earth. Sermons to the People collects the homilies on the liturgical seasons of the Church Saint Augustine delivered over the course of his lifetime. This Image edition includes the first sermons in that vast collection: from Advent, Christmas, New Year’s, and the Epiphany. Newly translated by William Griffin, they address timeless concerns, including the problems of materialism and the intellectual difficulties of faith. The Prison Sermons $17.35 The Prison Sermons are a collection of inspirational messages delivered by the author to inmates in Texas prisons. Drawing heavily from Scripture and occasionally from great classic Christian writers like Oswald Chambers, St. Augustine, Andrew Murray, Watchman Nee and C.S. Lewis, the sermons reveal the purpose of God’s law to both proclaim God’s holiness and righteousness and to make us aware of our need for a Savior. They show how God’s perfect justice requires that sin be punished wherever it is found, how this truth leaves us with God’s mercy as our only hope, and how the mercy of God is obtained through faith in Jesus Christ. The sermons address such important truths as God’s hatred of racism, true and false conversions, indwelling sin within the believer, spiritual warfare, the Signs of the Times, and dealing with the sinful nature (the flesh) as the only sure way to prevent recidivism. For more than six years, Rick Davis has served as a district judge in Brazos County, Texas. He and his wife, Carolyn, are Texas Aggies, and have six children. Before working as a judge, he worked as a lawyer. Prior to that, he worked as an engineer at NASA in Houston, Texas. Rick became a Christian during a crisis in his college years. He loves the Lord and loves spending time in the Word and reading great books. About two and a half years ago, the Lord opened a door for him to be a guest preacher in a prison in Huntsville, Texas. While a little apprehensive at first about how the inmates would treat a judge, he learned that many in prison have a deep hunger for the Word. He has been back to prison several times, and loves bringing messages of hope and encouragement to society’s outcasts. |

Sermons on the Beatitudes $20.05 This short series on the Beatitudes, translated for the first time into English, comprise Calvin’s exposition of Matthew 5:1-12, Mark 3:13-19 and Luke 6:12-26. Begun in 1559, the series was still not completed by 1564, when ill health forced his retirement from the pulpit. He died three months later making these sermons his very last effort to elucidate a New Testament text in the context of regular public worship. Transport yourself back to sixteenth-century Geneva, and hear the Reformer preach on issues of perennial Christian concern. |

Five Sermons $6.42 In so grave a matter as the restoration of organic unity, we may not surrender anything which is of Divine authority, or accept terms of communion which are contrary to God’s Word. We cannot recognize any usurpation of the rights and prerogatives of national Churches which have a common ancestry, lest we heal "the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly," and say "peace, where there is no peace; " but we do say that all which is temporary and of human choice or preference we will forego, from our love to our own kinsmen in Christ. |
